In an argument do you take the high road (tackle the topic) or the low road (attack the person's character)? Is everything "fair game"?

I'm always telling people how important it is to tackle the topic and not engage in endless personal attacks that are unproductive and just hurtful. I always get mixed responses:

  • Yes, always take the high road (tackling the topic, not attacking a person's character).
  • It's ok to take the low road (personal attack) bc "all's fair in love and war" (or whatever justification the other person has).

What do you think?
