What does "ask her out" mean to you?

I see this all the time in the context of a guy that likes a girl and doesn't know if she feels the same.

The advice is usually to ask her out and see if she says yes or no.

But what qualifies as asking someone out seems to vary?

"Would you like to go on a date?" Is unambiguous but not something anybody would really say.

"I'm in town this tomorrow, fancy a quick coffee?" Is natural , but too friend-like?

"I fancy seeing the Hobbit, would you like to go?" is somewhere in between.

What do you guys think?

If you're interested in a girl, you should ask her out to dinner. I would find out what kind of food she likes or what her favorite restaurant is...then take her there. I think stating "would you like to go on a date" is a bit too much. Asking for coffee is way too casual and going to the movies is not the best date idea. Yes she may like you just as a friend but the only way to know is to watch her body language and the way she talks/relates with you at dinner. Ofcourse if she cancels or wants to bring a friend, would indicate maybe she doesn't' like you as a friend.

I also would like to add that just because she says no to you doesn't mean she is not interested. Make sure you give her at least a 3 day notice for dinner. If she says no she may really have other plans.

I prefer the whole quick coffee thing because it's 'safe' for both parties. I mean, you can have an actual conversation and if there's anything actually going on without being too blunt and avoiding downright rejection -which can be rather uncomfortable for both!

To me, it means asking the girl on a date. But most my age seem to use asking someone out as meaning that they're going to be in an exclusive relationship. I'm a bit old-fashioned. I think it's okay to date around and get to know more than one person at a time until you decide if you want to be in a relationship with one of them.

Asking her out means spending your quality time with her . getting to know her better. A date, hangout, party or perhaps a event. generally it always when the girl/ guys fancies the opposite sex..unless you view the person as just friends..in most cases it means asking her" will you be my boyfriend/ girlfriend?"

O_O using I fancy kinda sounds strange

i suggest something like "hey (name), would you like (to go/do) (see movie/place) with me on (day of week)"

but if you feel you know her well enough, then you ask if she would like to be your girlfriend

It means. Would you like to go on a date?/ Would you like to be my date to ...?/ Would you like to go out this Friday?.

and people do say this.

I think this is the source of the confusion. Everybody has a different definition for "asking out". Some say to ask on a date, others say to ask someone to be their girlfriend.
