Or do you, like football and kung fu, have to start at age 5? Just wondering, because I know nothing about the tennis world.
Thanks :-)
I have a question for you. You say if you start at 18, but your age says that you're 30-35 (?)
But as for your question, then yes, you can get really good if you just worked hard at it. Thing is, we learn most physical things faster when we're not so young because we've gotten rid of the awkward getting-to-understand-your-body-stage. So it'll take fewer hours for you to learn good technique than it did for the top (who are now around 17-18). But then on the other hand the top has the technique AND top physical condition today. When you've learned the technique you'll still be a few years older and top physical condition is gone.
Tennis is a young sport because you need to have super fast reaction time-from your head to your feet-and age is pretty good at killing that. It's like my trainer said to me when I was a kid "You can put the world's best sprinter in the tennis court, but he wouldn't do any better because of it. You don't just have to run fast, you have to stop running fast, turning around fast, backing off fast."
But then if you're not aiming for the very top and you're willing to work your ass off then go for it! You'll never know until you've tried.
Psychology proves that it's never too late to learn anything.
Things such as sports, musical instruments, and languages are all a thousand times easier to learn when we're younger because the brain is still going through huge acts of development, as opposed to at eighteen, when you're just about at your physical peak.
So learning tennis (or anything else of that nature) is going to require a tremendous amount of effort and time on your part. But I taught myself how to sew when I was seventeen, and now, I'm taking classes in college that are teaching me a million things that I should have started fifteen years ago (Japanese being one of them). No, it is not impossible. It's just very, very difficult.
Honestly there is no age limit to tennis.. You can begin playing at 40 if its a hobby you want to do or a physical pursuit. Honestly just have fun and 18 years old is young.. lol and if you wanna become semi-pro you still have a chance many pro tennis players are 20s-30s lol I believe
If you want to turn pro at a sport and are starting late try golf :)
About four years ago I used to do a fair bit of tennis an got to the stage where I versed people who played national level (junior), now they while at school they where training morning and afternoon as well as comps on the weekend for hours everyday. I'd do maybe an hour or two a week and a comp, so now that I've just finished school they are heaps better than me ... And in saying that's at of them probably won't even make It to any major stage. The coaches that they have have won majors like the French open as well... So I'd say you have next to no chance, but there are always anomalies, people who start a sport at around 16 and go on to become one of the best so don't let me tell you what you can and can't do.
My advice would be choose a sport you love doing though, as I no kids who spent years training for tennis everyday and just burnt up and stopped as they hated it :)
Best of luck with your sporting endeavours :)
Also if you are set on tennis a good coach is a must, ie mine coaches Cambridge during their tennis season
Edit^ and in saying (that most)* of them probably won't...
Oh dear oh dear so many grammar errors I blame my iPhone ;)
"As I know* kids who spent years training..."
thnx :P
I've been playing tennis for 6 years and I'm no where near the level of a pro. Most pros on the tour started playing tennis and sticking with it since they were 4 or 5. Taking lessons, playing matches, its a fantastic sport that I heavily endorse and encourage everybody to try tennis. Its a sport you can start at 5 and end only when your bed ridden at 90.

It's never too late, really depends on your commitment and your natural ability... but you can definitely get to a good standard with the right attitude. It is more common for people to get picked up at a young age for these things nowadays... But there are still a few athletes who take up their sports as older guys and gals.
Yes, it's too late - especially if you're not a freak of nature (if you were exceptionally tall, a good serve could go some way towards making up for a lack of technique).
It's also a terrible attitude to be starting with - if you love a sport, you won't care how successful you are, and if you don't love a sport, there's zero chance that you will have the motivation to be successful.
Tennis is one of those sports that takes a long long time to get good at because there is a technique to every racket stroke. You could become good enough in about 10 years or less to play and win tournaments but nothing super professional I don't think.
It depends on your talent man... how good you are now, how much time you can spare on training, how fast you learn etc... It can certainly be done. Look at all the big players today that jumped from like 80th place to top 10. And besides you don't hit your prime till around 27-29 anyway.
Probably too late to become anything really decent. Most who are really good are good by the time they're 16, 17, 18. Just look at all of the top ranked tennis players, they're all in their late teens, early 20's (with the exception of a few). Tennis is not an easy sport and takes a lot of work to master.
It's too late to be good at ballet even if one starts at 16 so one can find an answer for tennis by comparing how close it is to ballet. I'm guessing if you really wan to get good atanything you should probably start at six.
i started tennis at 12, but a lot of people start way later in life. It only takes like 2 years to get good at it. good luck!
Yeah you can become good, probably not a profetional but still good. I read that it takes 10000 hours to master anything... So if you play for 5 hours a day every day in about 5 and a half years you'd be a pro ;)
I started playing teniis at about 7 or 8 years old and I wanted to become a professional player but to do that you need a lot of money
Never is too late. You can be 85 and play if you feel up to it at that age. ;-).
but not go pro :P
Never say never ;-). Maybe senior pro. ;-)
you might not get to the olympics but who cares? do what you wanna do
Not late at all. My mom started plaing tennis at 45 years old and now she's really good at it.
Nope, believe it or not, some NBA players started around 16-17 and made it to the NBA. Put int he work, you'll have no worries.
If the passion is there you can do anything.
Way to late
Definitely too late
