What is acid reflux disease? Is it curable?

So, your esophagus is a tube that connects your mouth to your stomach. It has a sphincter (ring of muscle fibers) that normally closes to keep your stomach contents down. If the sphincter doesn't close as well as it should, sometimes your stomach acid can leak back up into the esophagus.

If this happens, you might experience a burning pain in your chest, or you might feel the stomach acid coming up in your throat. This is more commonly known as "heartburn". You may also feel nauseous (like you're going to throw up) after eating.

Anyway, it's actually a pretty common problem. If it's mild, your doctor might just suggest taking antacids when it happens (tums, rolaids, etc.). If its a more significant problem for you, they may prescribe you a medication. I take a medication called omeprazole, but there are lots of different ones out there that work in various ways (for example, some decrease the acidity in your stomach, others speed up how fast your stomach empties). Sometimes you might have to try a few different medications to find one that works well for you.

Some doctors will diagnose you just based on symptoms and start you on a medication to see if that helps. Others will send you for testing, likely something called an "Upper GI series". Basically, they have you drink a carbonated liquid that expands your stomach and makes it a bit gassy. Then they make you drink a "contrast" fluid containing barium (its kind of chalky and thick). After that, they'll take a series of x-rays. The x-rays will let them see if the first liquid you drank is coming up your esophagus (causing you reflux). The contrast fluid will make this visible on the x-ray. The stuff you have to drink is kind of yucky, but the test is pretty simple/not a big deal.

While I can understand your doctor not wanting you to worry about something that might not end up being a problem, they should still at least inform you on such things...

It's when your stomach acid goes up into the back of your throat/mouth area. For me it usually occurs through a burp of some sorts but yeah it hurts a lot.

My suggestion to prevent it is to drink a lot of water, and eat some vegetables to ease your stomach.

I have it. It is heartburn. It is when acid from your stomach comes up through your throat and burns. Use omnezeprol and nothing else. I am 100% sure that it is the BEST product for that.

2 cheapest places (generic is 100% the same ingredients and just as effective) are the Dollar General and wallmart. Get the 2 week supply for about 11 bucks and sometimes they have specials. It is over the counter and please take it the same time everyday. I know you will feel so much better :) (thanks for BA)

Yes it's treatable. And it's when stomach acid flows back up the esophagus. Thus causing a burning sensation near the hurt, hence the name. If you have it you can take pills to neutralize the acid in your stomach and so help you keep it down.

It's also called GERD, it's not necessarily curable but you can do things to reduce your symptoms, like not eating spicy or acidic foods.
