My girlfriend is planning to wear a red dress to prom, what color tie goes with a red dress? How about black?

Prom is in a couple months and just for preparation purposes want color tie goes with your girlfriends red dress. I really want to wear black but I'm not sure whether it matches, please help

Actually, I had a coworker who wore a red dress to a formal work event and her boyfriend wore a dark navy suit with a red tie and he looked awesome; got compliments on his dress sense all night from what I remember.

If you are set on wearing a black suit though, I think a navy tie and red pocket square would look great. And it would still match your date without looking too "matchy matchy". Wear what you fwel comfortable in though, that's the most important thing. :)

Instead of just basic black, why don't you try matching your tie to your girlfriend's dress? See if you can find a tie that's the same shade of red as her dress. But keep in mind that the color of your tie needs to look good with the outfit that you're wearing. So if you decide to wear a black tuxedo, then a red tie would be a good fit. Just try to coordinate your look a bit with hers.

Usually, when trying to match as a couple you would wear a black tux and whatever color tie to match your dates dress.  So, black tux, red tie.  That's really the most typical, unless you want to wear same color tux, but make sure you can pull of red. Good luck and have fun at prom!

id suggest taking her dress to the store with you to pick out a red tie to match! Then have a white dress shirt and a black suit coat or whatever!...honestly Hun black goes well with most colors other than brow and navy blue!

You should consider yourself lucky. When I was a senior, my boyfriend had to match my PINK dress! :) He enjoyed it hahaha. I even went with him to pick out the correct shade of pink.

Usually the school will have some tux guy come to school and have him size you and they will have a tie booklet with a large amount of ties and colors. Its awesome.

you can get red & black ties, I would go to some place like moores or tip top tailors if you have those where you live. or a red tie with grey vest/ black suit. etc.

You could do all black with a red tie, black suit red shirt and black tie or black suit white shirt red tie. Basically make sure the tie or dress shirt are red :)
