In what ways do guys "test the waters" to see if a girl is interested?

I should add that I'm looking for examples of ways they might try and ask a woman out without actually doing it directly.

Just too many ways to do it. But one of my favorites is...lol. I know for a fact how much girls love to attract the attention, even undesired (attention is still attention no matter how much you camouflage it. = Girls love it / unless they are ghosts). A thing I would do is walk pass her, then slow down my walk a little bit then stop and turn around to see the features of the girl that just passed me by. Then go on like noting and do my own things. Once in a while the girl I passed by is eating somewhere close to where I was, and I can go up to speak with her if I feel like it. I've rarely been rejected the times I've done it.

I did it once at the gym, after ending my workout and went to the Stretching mat. A pleasant surprise the girl I stopped to look at her features came to stretch just beside me. Then another girl came over and they were talking loud enough for me to join the conversation if I wanted to.

It's fun how inviting girls can be when you know how to get around her Bitch shield.
