I could give you the long-form answer about differences in how the respective sexes are taught to communicate, but I have a feeling you're not interested. SO, I shall keep it short and sweet (and devoid of emoticons)!

Girls put smiley faces in emails, texts, and other text-based forms of communication because a lot of context is lost over bare-faced words. A comment that could be meant as light teasing can be taken as a very serious insult (for example: "Meghan, you're such a slut!"). We use emoticons to, well, convey emotions. When we don't want the person to take us very seriously, we use cheery emoticons like smiley faces and tongue faces to lighten the mood. When we're communicating "sadness" over something trivial (like being out of cereal), we use sad faces. And I'm sure that based on all this, you can pretty much assume why we used freaked-out faces, straight-faced faces, etc. It's all to convey emotions, avoid misunderstandings, and lighten the mood. Believe it or not, girls don't like confrontation very much!

Using a smiley softens the blow of a really obnoxious comment so it seems more like flirting...

... Text flirting needs to be playful in order to keep interest... Texting is emotionless and sarcasm can be misinterpreted... smillies help show emotions hence the name emoticons and women are more openly emotional

It is our way of being creative, expressimg ourselves! The meaning on the other hand varies. It could be just for fun, to give you a more vivid image on how theyre feeling, flirting for fun/out of bordem, flirting to let you know that we're into you, or feels like sexting etc.

:) means exactly that: smiley face. I use it with everyone. I guess it can have different meaning depending on the actual content of the text. sometimes I use it if I'm not sure if my text will be interpreted as funny/nice/etc.

for me it is just for fun you now? a winky face for flirting a smily face for fun sad face for sad. you can't really show your emotions through text so we add faces. it's not a badthing unless you get an angry face. those are used for special cercumstances.
