well, depending on what he texts you, if its gross and inappropriate then he just is so drunk and he wants to have fun, on the other hand, have you ever heard "Drunken words are sober thoughts" ? Maybe what he's saying to you is real, you just got to decipher it for yourself. And basically what alcohol does is give the courage to say and do things we normally wouldn't do, things our mind tell us not to say or show, so take that in consideration when you're trying to figure this out. I would do that too just to bypass the fear. If you watch the big bang theory, Raj uses alcohol to brazenly to talk to girls but he can't do it without. This is the only reason. You know what they say, alcohol is 'truth serum'. It unblocks his mind so he can tell you how he truly feels.
