Their believe, their ideas that are mostly likely wrong took the best of them and they decided to act regardless of what action it will bring at the end no matter what casualties it will bring. These people will loose everybody and everyone for the sake of their personal satisfaction and personal approval that they were right, even though deep inside of them they know that their entire thinking and idea is entirely flawed, but it is just to damn hard to admit it to them self's, so they pursue their endless arrogant idea that will be the fall of their self's and their loved ones.

So with any issue you face in life, it can be considered an uphill battle. You can be a great climber, you can beat anything that comes your way. However, if you get careless, you can still slip and fall no matter how good or high up you are. Arrogance will cause you to miscalculate, slip up and miss out on victory.

I think it is a quote speaking to those whose difficult goals are now in easy reach. When one has overcome so much without failure, one can begin to feel unstoppable, leading to arrogance. The footholds of victory represent the final stages of a goal, when all appears to be smooth sailing, but if one becomes arrogant they may make fatal mistakes in overconfidence and be ruined.

All the things you mentioned can be overcome with a single factor, be it a lucky bullet, an act of God, a sudden change in the weather, etc.

There's nothing wrong with being humble, even if you are right. Arrogance is simply an action of masked insecurity... if you are truly confident you are able to step back and listen to others, even if you are undoubtedly correct.

Ooo nice question! Personally I do not believe that luck plays a role in war, mainly because each action has a reaction. I think if anything, cunning, diligence, and bravery play a greater role than "luck".
