The saying "If you love something, let it go. If it comes back it was meant to be, if not then it never truly loved you." is a well known one. I find it to be the stupidest fucking advice ever. When a person is truly in love, they'd do anything for them.

Say person A and person B are both in love. If person A let's B go because A believes B will be happier, B will leave because B believes that's what A wants. That's a confusing situation and just as stupid as the saying above.

Losing someone you are in love with can be one of the most painful things to go through. Whether it's they cheat on you, leave you or die. It is like your heart has just been torn to pieces.

But love is a beautiful part of life. Love is a natural thing while hatred is taught.

When you lose that one person that was your world, you lose your center of gravity. Your world collapsed in on itself.

If you love someone, tell them. If you don't love someone, tell them you don't. Love is not a game. Love is for two people. Love is for those who want it or need it. Love is not something to be taken for granted.

Don't leave someone you love if you can help it.

The love of the one who got away will stay pure in your heart. No matter how long you have been away from them, if you're married with children or they're dead. Your heart will remember them, even if you don't want to.

Leaving someone you love because you think it'll make them happy, is bull shit. If you love someone, stay with them. If they wanted to leave you then they would. The only time you should leave someone is if they disrespect you (cheating/lying to you) or if you are unhappy.

Value and treasure the person you love. True love doesn't come along often. When you find it, keep it close to your heart.

Before you argue for or against the quote, try to put it into a proper context. What do you think that quote is about?

What, if anything, do you think this description has in common with 1 Corinthians 13:4-7?

Old saws and proverbs are very rarely ever just totally wrong. It's easy to rail against them, especially when we're in certain moods (LOL). But, really, people wouldn't play telephone for hundreds of years with something that is ultimately a bullshit idea with no value.

Can you put this quote into a context in which it makes sense?

I could but I generally disagree with it. I don't think you should let anything go if you love them. It's idiotic to me. If I love someone then fuck yea Imma do everything I can to keep them. If theyre unhappy, if Im unhappy or if they cheat on me is the only time i'd say a permanent goodbye to them

You may be taking the words "let go" and "come back" too literally. That's another problem with old proverbs: they're proverbs. LOL For the most part they aren't meant to be taken literally. Even if they DO make literal sense, more often than not that's just an overtone of what the proverb is really saying.

Here's another analogy (because lawd knows that's what you need here, is ANOTHER analogy, lol): I think yr confusing "let go of the clutch and steering wheel" with "jump out of the car".

The quote is obviously not saying that you should sabotage a relationship and then hope the person comes crawling back anyway. That's DEFINITELY not what it is saying. Because that would just be the worst life advice ever.

Well, I'm with you all the way here. I mean, I literally cannot even fathom the thought of existing without my man. I mean, there was a conversation just yesterday (I think) where @ArtDent made some offhand joke about that, and I just totally lost it. Literally started crying at the mere thought of this love-thing, of ours, ending.
So, yea, I got you there.

But, it's still worth looking for the meaning, in any quote that has survived for as long as it has. Especially if it's a quote that seems to go against the grain of yr own experiences/feelings. Since that's where you can often gain the most perspective.

Literally I agree with you totally but in life there maybe occasions when the first part of this saying may arise. In a perfect world A loves B and B loves A with no impediments. So there is no reason why one person should leave without wanting to leave but the world is not black and white, sometimes occasions may arise that mean a couple who love each other may decide to split.
That is the first part but I agree with you the rest of the saying a bit silly - It is for Romeo and Juliet fantasists - 99.9% of couples in love who split will stay split - Is 0.1% of people enough to make a truism about, probably not but it makes great romantic fiction.

You can fall in love with someone who is totally wrong for you, or even bad for you. Sometimes, being in love with the wrong person, can be deadly. Even loved an addict? The only way to save them is to leave them. Addicts don't change until they've lost everything, and even then, it may not be enough. Just one example.
Example 2, People change, fact of life. People never change because they want to, change is a gradual thing imposed on us by living. And when this happens, they may no longer be the person you love/who loved you. They may think they still love you, because of habit and familiarity, but that may also blind them to any pain they may be causing you. Loving someone is no reason to allow yourself to be unhappy. WHen you're unhappy, it DOES show and affect the way you act towards those around you.

I agree that if you love someone you tell them but sometimes there are misunderstandings. Sometimes two can walk around not knowing that both actually love each other and sometimes it's too late. It's not always black and white indeed.
