Will you take your sweetie out to dinner on Valentine's Day?

Valentine's Day is reported to be the second busiest day of the year for restaurants. Wait times of one hour or more are the norm and some restaurants offer a limited menu to ease the burden on the kitchen staff. Prices may be inflated. If you are a practical person, you probably believe that is it reasonable for you to forgo this extravagance and simply stay at home on Fenruary 14.

If you are a practical person, you may be missing some of the finer points of romance.

1. Romance is not practical. It is not logical.

Having another person intimately involved in our lives presents complications. It requires effort. Romance can be . . . just downright messy, but . . . romance is not supposed to be practical. Love comes from the heart, not the head, and it does not follow rules of logic. If you want romance, accept the fact that love sometimes presents silly complications and you do need to consider the feelings of someone else and you may need to do things that could otherwise be avoided. Why bother? Because, to quite Mr. James Taylor, "love's the finest thing around!"

2. When you are in a relationship, your partner wants to know that you love them.

At least occasionally, and hopefully more often, you should be telling your partner those magic three little words . . . not "let's go shopping" but the even more magic "I love you!" Hearing those words is great; it really fills a heart with joy. But hearing those words is not enough. If you truly love someone, it is obvious in your actions. Your partner wants to see your love in action. Guys, your lady wants to be treated like a special lady, like someone who is worth making a fuss over.

You may think that this is just the little girl in your woman demanding attention and you are right. Sometimes, women want to have their little girl notions about love and romance come true. This is particularly true on Valentine's Day and on their birthday. Don't think less of women because they have a little girl inside of them. Sometimes, the little boy inside you comes out to play (video games in the man cave, chrome on your truck, having the 150" TV, etc.)

3. When you indulge your sweetie on Valentine's Day, she will remember it for a very long time.

It will inspire her to show you how much she loves you. This is the kind of "work" that you should to keep love alive. Neglect the garden and everything will wither and die. Tend the garden regularly and it will fluorish; the fruits of love will feed the soul. Take your sweetie out to dinner on Valentine's Day!
