Take Your Daughter on a "Date," Embrace the Childlike Wonder of Valentine's Day

When I think about Valentine's Day, the first thing that springs to mind is some fond childhood memories. In school, we would hand out Valentine's cards to our classmates, pass around candy hearts, and everyone was busy giggling, teasing, and -- sometimes -- harassing one another.

It was pretty great.

And if we super-duper-kinda-sorta-maybe liked someone? Well, we might even stop chasing them around the schoolyard long enough to fashion a handmade card out of construction paper just for them.

Ah, true love at its finest!

Exhibit A: this darling little handmade card. (Anyone else see a future in Crime Scene Investigation here?

Anyway, there's no doubting that Valentine's Day has a special childlike-innocence about it, and that's something we should embrace. How, you ask? By taking your daughter (or your niece, or your younger sister, or your younger cousin -- you get the idea) on a cute little "date," of course!

There's too many great reasons not to do it, and here are four of the standouts:

You can create precious, life-long memories

1. Memories and experiences matter. They're probably the most valuable currency we've got, so put away that dusty two-year-old box of Russell Stovers, throw on a decent shirt, and go make some!

Take your daughter to dinner and a show, laugh with her at a silly movie, and cherish those moments when she's still your little girl. As we all know, time flies; you don't get as many chances to make wonderful memories as you might think.

It will bring joy to a little girl's life

2. You can bring so, so much joy to a little girl's life by treating her special. By taking her on a "date," she gets to feel like daddy's little girl. There's just something so reaffirming for a child, knowing that your parent is there just because they want to be with you, and no one else. All of their energy is focused on you and the fun you're having together.

And, hey, side bonus: she gets to play dress-up, too!

You can show her how a gentleman behaves

3. It gives you a chance to model good male behavior to her. Show her how a gentleman behaves.

There's no better way for a girl to develop gentlemanly expectations of men than for her daddy to show her what's up.

Open her doors (yes, the car doors too).

Tell her she looks pretty.

Ask her about school, her friends, anything.

Pull out her chair. But do it like this:

There's more than one type of love, so don't hesitate to share all of it

4. Romantic love isn't the only type of love we should share. Yes, it's true, Valentine's Day is typically geared toward couples and romantic love, but why stop there?

A father's love for his daughter should be celebrated, too, so why not take the opportunity this February 14th to do just that?

Beyond all of the frills and all of the silly stuff, it's important to show your daughter -- to tell your daughter -- that she's special and you love her.

Knowing that her daddy loves her will mean the world to her now...

And she'll remember it forever...
