How To Enjoy Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is primarily a Western cultural phenomenon. Although the day is named after Saint Valentine, in 1969, the Roman Catholic Church removed the saint from its canon of saints, because there was not enough evidence to support the saint's existence. The saints are supposed to be real people that have done extraordinary or miraculous things. That certainly doesn't stop Western culture from celebrating it as a secular phenomenon and you from enjoying the harmless fruits of Western culture. :)

Here are some ideas how you can join the bandwagon!

1. Write customized and illustrated Valentine's Day cards with your own poetry and handwriting!

Send the cards to your family members, friends, co-workers, boss, classmates, teachers, just about anyone! You may even send cards to your enemies! Customize the poem of each card to reflect how you think of them! Remember to think positive thoughts!

Sweets are so delicious,

But they aren't nutritious.

Have a card instead,

With sweet words well-said.

Happy Valentine's Day!

2. Show a bright smile on your face, and say "Happy Valentine's Day" to everyone you meet!

3. Instead of asking your crush to be your valentine or showing your romantic partner a gift, you may want to spread the love to your enemies.

Do you have a grudge on someone for something? Have you ever harbored evil thoughts against someone out of jealousy or wrath? Maybe now's the time to recognize that wrong and make amends. Try to think positive, happy thoughts about the person, and admire and imitate that person's best qualities and ignore bad qualities. Jealousy and revenge don't work, and may even make the problem worse. If someone has ever wronged you, then forgive, no matter how hard it seems, and also try to work with the person if that person needs help with self-improvement. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, give them the other. (Matthew 5:39; Luke 6:29) In short, just love your enemies. (Matthew 5:44; Luke 6:27-36) Aren't we all imperfect beings? Haven't we all done something wrong? Why should we focus on the weaknesses and faults of others to the extent that we forget our own? (Matthew 7:5; Luke 6:42) Why should we feel jealous of other people's accomplishments and blessings to the extent that we forget our own accomplishments and blessings? Just send your enemies a genuine Valentine's Day card, and maybe, you'll make someone's day. :)

Hope these ideas are inspiring! They are meant for everyone. It doesn't matter if you are religious, irreligious, or somewhere in between; the ideas are for everyone. I'm sure the biblical citations may be distracting to some people, but I feel that they express human nature very well. Plus, the Bible is a very influential work in Western culture, so you can't have Western culture without acknowledging biblical influences.
