Why I Share My Social Media Passwords With My Boyfriend

Wow. What a topic I'm going to start on! Password sharing with significant other. This will be a short and sweet little MyTake!

Sharing passwords can be a lack of trust, but it doesn't have to be. It depends on the relationship you share with your partner. For me, my boyfriend and I know each other's password to all our accounts and believe me, it's also useful! The amount of times I've gone away and forgotten my passwords when I get back! (Forgetful) Anyway, the way I see it, is it's not a lack of trust if you don't make it to be. I got nothing to hide so even if he asks for it (btw he didn't, we just naturally shared it one day when we were both scrolling through our newsfeed) I'd be alright with giving him the security of knowing it. At the end of the day, my boyfriend means the world to me, I got nothing to hide and if he's insecure about something I'm doing, I'd do anything to make him think different.

However these days, it's like the social media platforms help you. You are able to see on facebook, if someone logged in and where they logged into your profile at what time, and even the 'Seen' feature on messages would help you if you're that worried about it. For me privacy includes my boyfriend, he knows everything about me and is the only person that does. That's just our preference of how our relationship is, everyones is different. We have this thing where if there's a message we don't want each other to read because it one of our friends and it's a private thing, we let each other know and we give a small rundown on why and what it is without mentioning what's being discussed word for word and it's understanding. That's where the trust is built between us because we communicate so openly.

But at the end of the day, it's your choice, maybe you want that privacy in your relationship and that's fine! It's your relationship :)

I am not going to tell you, that sharing passwords is wrong but here is what I think regarding your arguments:

This is not something, that you can control at least half of the times. If any partner is insecure about the other, it's usually on them, not always their partner. (Sharing passwords in my opinion makes it only worse as it fuels the already present fire)

How exactly is this of any benefit? You'd just give the illusion of being online recently when *you* were not to your contacts.

Not very related but social media users have no privacy, even if you're hiding information from others. After all the data is stored on social media and the governments, law enforcement and the cops can gain that information as quick as 2 letter exchanges with the company, that you - as the user of it - are registered in. That is provided, that you and the company are located in the same country.

This effectively defeats the whole purpose of sharing passwords in the first place.

Now, now. I'm not asking you to change your password and not let your boyfriend know your password because it's your choice. I am missing some *real* arguments here why to share passwords.

I mean, that's cool and all but can we please drop the "I've got nothing to hide" excuse, as if that automatically means that those who don't want to share their passwords DO have something to hide.
I've got nothing to hide either, I just don't want to share any of my passwords with my boyfriend because 1) I don't see the point, they're my accounts and he wouldn't be allowed to post anything anyway, so technically all he can do is snoop, 2) my conversations with my friends and family are private, and sometimes contain very delicate details that nobody else should know about, 3) my boyfriend is not entitled to my private life just because we're together. We're still allowed to have private aspects that we can share only if we feel it's necessary.
So yeah like I said, it's cool that you're that open with your boyfriend and for some people it works. However, I personally don't see the point, and I also don't understand the "I've got nothing to hide" argument, because neither do I. And there's no way in hell I'm ever sharing my password with anyone, unless it's an emergency.

haha I get it girl! I've got nothing to hide is just another point towards why I do it, I'm not stating that if you don't share that you have something to hide because I know many people don't share either haha :) It all comes down to personal preference, thanks for your input! :)

To me I don't exactly share the passwords with my boyfriend except our joint account. He does have full access of my phone and laptop though. To me its like I don't need to share the passwords to prove I have nothing to hide or make him feel secured. And he doesn't need to do so as well. I trust him, he trusts me and we have a very tight connection, his family is like my family, my family is like his. We know each other very well enough but not every little history, leaving something in the past is very important to us and to keep things fresh and mystery. Like he doesn't have to know what conversation I had with a random guy on facebook back to 7 years ago. And he doesn't have to show me a picture he took in the club with other sexy girls back to 10 years ago. So I don't think not sharing passwords meaning trust issues. And plus our work issues, we both signed contract of confidentiality for our own companies, so things can get sensitive sometimes.
Again, to each of their own. Whatever you feel like which way could make the relationship works ;)

I could never share my password just for the sheer respect I have for my friends privacy. Just like when I hang out with a friend I don't share personal information to anyone. If my friend wanted them to know, they would tell them themselves. The fact that they didn't tells me it's none of my business to make my friends business anyone elses. And the same thing with any girlfriend I may have. My friend should be able to talk to me without worrying whether or not my girlfriend is going to read it. I was once talking with a co-worker about something personal and then found out her husband read it because she shares her password with him. Since then I have refused to text her or anything.

I miss this... hAd similar bond with my ex till she started lying or hiding info or created different accounts and would use her phone in secrecy and odd timings...

It's obvious when someone's cheating or wants to... the Chinese say you often meet your destiny on the path you take to avoid it.

It took majority of my soul but I asked her never to comeback... hurts like hell but hurts less than being cheated on...

I love to believe there's a very special place in hell that belongs to cheaters..

yes I totally agree with you but make sure that person doesn't have a hidden personality. When I read this I thought about the vegas bray case. How would things be if her boyfriend gave her the passwords to the account? would she still have stalked him to his death? would she still have shot him 9 times in his own apartment? her case changed the outlook on trust for me. She hacked into his accounts and etc. I use to say that I would give my social media information up for a special person in my life. The problem is there is no telling what they person gonna do when you both breakup because breakups can change a person into someone you never seen before. Everyone is different. I agree with what you are saying totally.

I wouldn't like to do it for some reasons:
1) My bestie might be sharing something with me that she doesn't want anyone else to know. So I better keep it between us. What if my bestie would mind if my partner gets to know? People might be sharing their personal things with me which I wouldn't like my partner to know.
2) What if I plan to give him a surprise but he gets to know it from my accounts?

I believe I would let him know the password to some of my accounts, but not all.

Nice take and makes sense. Personally I enjoy my personal bit of space, not that I have anything to hide, but I just feel more comfortable being able to have some private me time every now and then.

But I can definitely see the benefits of what you do. It would bring you closer as a couple when you've got additional things like passwords that you keep between each other.

My wife and I only share passwords to joint accounts. In some cases, due to our professions, it's literally illegal for us to know some of the other's passwords.

Personally, I don't like it. Imagine you broke up with him one day in the future. Your ex (who may or may not hate you depending on the break up) now has your account information for everything. He could ruin your social life, abuse your bank account, etc. I don't risk it.

Yep, I remember I shared an account password with my ex. After we broke up, my current girlfriend informed me that my ex planned to change the password. I had to change it quickly and claim it.

I don't recommend it because if the relationship goes sour they can destroy your accounts. My ex knew my SC password and when we broke up he went in and deleted all my pictures. I was more upset over him deleting my pictures than the fact that we broke up.

Sharing your password within anyone is a security risk, but if you don't mind that risk then more power to you. Working in IT and reading news reports, you wouldn't believe how easy it is to slip up on security. Especially if giving someone else that information. What happens if they accidentally type it into a post, or share it by mistake? Sure you may trust your partner, but people are only human they make mistakes and sharing your password with others, just widens the gap of possible chances that not just you, but he as well might goof up and make your password known to the world.

Our society is based on trust. So if we trust a person we might be cheaten. So never give your password. This problem is with the houskey.
You must trust someone. But who.
The nice people are the last you can trust.
So our society is in deep trouble.
The evil person ofcourse wants your password and keys. So they make you trust them and the most friendly people are therefor evil.
So how does a person react you actually can trust. They avoid you. You never meet them. They say , 'no , I can not handle that responsibility'.
So they say do not trust such irrisponsible people.
So those you should trust. And nobody else if you can find such people because they hide.

I don't find it necessary to share my social media passwords with my boyfriend, but we do have the passwords to each other's phones and laptops. It's practical more than anything else, but it's also a show of trust- not the opposite. If I didn't trust him, there's no way I'd give him that access, or expect it in return.

In a weird way I think that may be a healthy attitude. Our partners are always going to have some degree of anxiety even if there's no reason to. By making yourself vulnerable like that, I feel like you're allowing a deeper trust to flourish. I'm not a psychologist though.

Trust is when you turn your back to someone, opening yourself to a knife but you don't look behind yourself. It's vulnerability.

For me there is absolutely no way she will ever get them. Thats just a terrible security policy. But if she is next to me and feels the need to i dont mind her looking trough my phone or accounts. But not behind my back thats a violation of trust.

I would totally be open to sharing social media accounts and my actually phone password but not bank accounts and all (not till i marry him).

I hope my boyfriend would be willing to share his acc with me. It'll just show I can trust him
