My parents never let me go out on new years? Am I wrong?

I just had a big argument with my mother because I asked her if I can go with my best friend to go pick up her brother from the mall. The mall is literally 10 minutes away by car and my mother tells me I'm not going anywhere. I told her I'll be back in an half hour and she still says no. The only reason why she wants me to stay is because she wants the family to be together for when the ball drops. EVERY SINGLE YEAR I've been home for new Years and the one day I want to go out and go do something besides stay home she won't let me. She called me ungrateful for wanting to go out and said that she does everything for me and that i should stay home for once. I appreciate my mother, i really do but the one time I DO go out for new years i can never! not like I'm going to a party and i'll be home before 12! UGH. This honestly was just a rant lol

your mum is similar to mine, except that mine only wanted me to be around when we have reunion dinner on chinese new year eve.
i think it doesn't make sense to stick around the house and doing nothing just because it is new year, but then again it is like once a year so just appease her.
when u r old enough to live alone, you won't have to stick to the tradition anymore.

I'm the same age as you so I can understand why you feel so frustrated. I think this situation has to have understanding on both sides. I think she probably should have let you go with your friend and she should definitely allow you to do something else on New Year's if you really wanted to. Or at least let you invite over some friends or something. But on the other hand, you should also understand that family time is important and say to your friend "I'd love to hang out, but I should probably be with my family right now". But when all is said and done, pretty soon you'll be on your own in the world and able to do whatever you want (relatively). You might want to have a mature and calm conversation with your mom about this later this week so that the next time you can maybe be given more freedom within the next situation. She still needs to learn to let go, because you are 18.
