Romantic relationships are based on fantasy, not reality. In the beginning of romantic relationships, people are not affected realistically by the other person they are living a fantasy.

However, when they become used to the other person, the fantasy begins to fade and the blinders are off. They may have only been attracted to the other person by looks or some other superficial trait.

But long-lasting friendships are not based on fantasy, they are based on mutual interests respect, and similar things.

They are gradually built as the people learn more about the other person.

Researchers say that the best marriages started out as friendships. That is because there was no fantasy in the beginning, a the couple knew what they were getting into when they married.

Generally friendships are built off of convenience while romantic relationships are built off of attraction. Boring answer but there it is.
