A backup boyfriend is a male who is stuck somewhere between the boyfriend and friend status. A girl sees potential in him being a boyfriend but he doesn't check off all the things on her physical attraction list for a mate and so she deems him just a friend for the time being while she is still looking.

Usually a backup boyfriend sometimes plays boyfriend duty while a girl is single and even when she is in a relationship; if her current boyfriend is slacking off. The backup boyfriend can get elevated to boyfriend status under following conditions:

1. Rebound guy after a girl just came out of a breakup
2. If a girl just got dumped and feels really shitty about herself
3. If a girl is feeling old and past her prime and is still single.

The girl in question usually always knows that the backup boyfriend had feelings for her or he actually did confess feelings for her at one point.

No, for several reasons. I don't need someone as a buck-up if my boyfriend isn't doing what he should. It's called communication, and it solves 90% of most relationship problems. Even if I were single, it would be dumb to keep someone as a "back up". Either I'm into you, or I'm not I'm not going to toy with you like a cat and a mouse for awhile. I've been the mouse, and it's bullshit. Either get your shit together or just remain totally single, no backups needed.

Yes I do. He spends a lot of money on me and I sometimes (very rarely) sleep with him, he gets to feel like a big man and I get free stuff. Before anyone gets upset, he is my ex boyfriend, he broke up with me and broke my heart so it's not like anyone is being used here. We also give each other emotional support when we need it but he is my no means my boyfriend.

No I don't even have a boyfriend never mind a backup boyfriend. Lol. But its a good post that I can sort of relate to. A so-called friend that I had at secondary school used to always ask me out right after he split up with his girlfriend's. He just wanted me as a rebound. I told him, no way!

I have a friend like that. he ended up liking me after we were best friends for 4 years and basically said if I said there was no chance of us being together he wouldn't talk to me again. I didn't want to lose him as a friend so he's kind of just been undefined since then
