Which is worse, a read or unread message?

If you have someone that you talk to primarily through Facebook Messenger or a similar app, which is worse:

Reading a message, not responding to it, and continuing to use the app to talk to other people?

or

Leaving a message as unread and continuing to use the app to talk to other people?

Reading it and not responding

Leaving it as unread

Reading because it leaves my imagination to run and my anxiety to overthink things and come up with terrible reasons why. Unread just means they are busy or I'm not a big priority in their life, both of those answers I'm fine with.
