What do you think is worse, messaging someone on social media, and the person doesn't read the message, or reads the message, and doesn't reply back?

I don't think either would particularly bother me. If it's important I'll contact them directly, not through social media. Granted G@G is the closest I come to social media, but much like a read receipt in email... doesn't mean you read it, just means it was opened. If that's in the middle of a meeting I don't expect it to be read.

If they just flat out never get back to me, then it makes no difference if it was opened or not, clearly we weren't having a great conversation.

From my side, not reading it is worse. I like to open messages and see if they are interesting. If I don't open the message, I don't even wanna know
