Is this a mistake?

I met this guy in a dating app and things were incredible, we have been dating for 8 months and we have had very good chemistry and have had very significant things (I have shared the quarantine with him, I traveled to the north of the country to be with him (he moved there) for work and he paid me for the flight), we have said things to each other about the feelings for each other and we have met our families by video call).

The is that we are currently in a "relationship" at a distance and it is not something that will last more than a year because next August he leaves the country to study for a master's degree. For my part I am in the middle of my own postgraduate program and am planning to apply to another in UK for next year. so there are not many opportunities to maintain this so I was thinking, with the pain of my heart, better to end this "relationship" and better to focus on my own projects but I do not know, I have the feeling that I am making a mistake for practical reasons and not So much for emotions.
Is this a mistake?
