+1 yI believe that all couples should discuss how they want to proceed with taking care of the expenses in their own relationships and come to an agreement that, whether it is strict or lax or anywhere in between, they will both be happy to keep to the agreement and that keeping to that agreement works the best for THEM and it keeps them happy.
Also, how couples deal with their expenses is none of my business and I have no part - and no interest - in dictating how other people deal with this. All couples are unique. Even what works for Person A in one relationship might be different when Person A moves on to another relationship.
As it is, if you're a woman who believes in traditional gender roles, then you will be happier in a relationship who believes in the same. The same can be said for women who take a more egalitarian approach to their relationships - they might be better off pairing with men who hold the same view.
Of course, not every aspect is going to align 100% most of the time, so in those areas where they don't see eye-to-eye, there will have to be some negotiation from both parties to reach a satisfactory agreement that they are happy with.
For me, relationships aren't cookie-cutters where every couple in existence hews to the same rules or does everything the same like every other couple.
To me, relationships should be calibrated to account for two unique individuals - it is the couple who makes the relationship, and not the other way round.
In other words, relationships are bespoke.20 Reply

+1 yDepends on the situation. If the woman works and has money she of course has to pay. If she's a stay at home mom then of course she doesn't have to pay. If you're just casually dating and he makes more than you he should pay. If y'all make the same or the woman makes more she of course has to pay.
Men only pay when the woman does provide or has an expectation to provide non monetary services. Not talking about sex per se. More like cooking and cleaning and that sort of thing.
I pay the bills she cooks cleans and does things that make me more productive. If she worked such that i also had to cook clean etc then hell yeah she's paying for stuff.00 Reply
I believe that should be between a couple and it shouldn't be with people trying to dictate others relationships unless it's not getting them anywhere. If a man is taking a woman out, he should be willing to pay. If you don't have much to really spend, she should equally be willing to invest. But at this point that should not happen unless you are looking to get married and have a serious future with each other. Other than that is however ways go and it's whatever rules the other set.

+1 yIt’s completely dependent on the specific dynamic of the relationship in question, not on the gender of the people involved in said relationship.

Dynamic meaning who makes the most? - +1 y
That is part of it sure. But suppose it's a "traditional" relationship where she has no income and he works 40+ hours a week. Would be kinda dumb to expect her to lay for half of everything. Or suppose it's a lesbian relationship, gender is completely irrelevant there. There are a lot of different factors that go into it.

+1 yI would rather just take care of these expenses myself, with help from her on occasion. I've tried the whole 50-50 split thing, and it just turned into keeping score. I don't keep score in my relationships; it's a recipe for disaster.

Makes sense, but I don't think you need to settle for the choice between paying for everything yourself and keeping score. My girlfriend and I usually just take turns, give or take; for example, I might get lunch one date and she gets it the next, or maybe she buys the movie tickets and I cover dinner. It's less about a tit-for-tat balance sheet and more about neither person mooching off of the other, ya know? That said, there's nothing wrong with being more of a provider if that's what you enjoy, just an alternative suggestion.

That’s how we had tried to do things. It was fine by me. I’m not the one who chose to keep score though.

Thank you for your input (;
It makes sense
+1 yI think it should depend on the situation. If the guy makes more money (as is the case, most of the time), he should pay more. He can afford it. If the woman makes more, she should pay more. If they make about the same, they should split it. That's what I think, anyway.
10 Reply689 opinions shared on Relationships topic. Do you believe that men should do 50% of the cooking and cleaning, or that women should take care of all or most of the homemaking?
That's going to determine whether you can find a man who's willing to pay the bills. Only a fool would pay all the bills and still see the housework as his responsibility.02 Reply- +1 y
Why you’re so angry?
And I was raised in a house where my father took care of the bills and my mother worked because she didn’t want to sit around but never paid any bills unless my father fell short and she took care of the house...
It’s actually traditional..
No need to call anyone else fools, speak for yourself and go about your business.
We all were raised different. - +1 y
I'm not angry at all. And you're right, that is traditional and there's nothing wrong with it. I'm just saying that if you want a man who adheres to his traditional role as provider, you have to be willing to adhere to your traditional role as homemaker.
My grandparents were the same way, and it worked for 50 years. He paid the bills, she kept the house and took care of him and worked part time for her own spending money (but she never let her job get in the way of taking care of her husband)
On the other hand, if you work and expect him to split the housework and cooking 50/50, you should also split the bills.
+1 yI don't mind paying for my woman as long as she doesn't misuse it. And of course I would expect something in return and I don't just mean sex.
Relationships are an investment and if she is worth it, she is worth it.10 ReplyAs a man I love paying for things. I think it depends on the financial situation. I think whoever's makes the most money should pay more. Money is worthless, it's how you treat each other and respect each other that's important.

I'm not going to say it should be strictly 50/50 but as long as there is mutual effort or coverage from both parties, I'm happy. It's all about give and take.00 ReplyI think guys should pay on first dates. Later on, you can agree on what works for you as a couple
