My boyfriend left one of his hand guns at my house for me to keep for protection... Would/Do other gun owners leave their gun (s) at their SOs house?

My boyfriend (M27) is very protective & he asked me (F24) to keep one of his hand guns in my house so he can sleep better when we are apart.

I now have a small caliber hand gun in my possession, along with extra bullets.

Do other gun owners leave a handgun at their SOs house for protection?
Does it mean anything that he left it with me?
Would you accept one of your SOs guns if they asked you to keep one?

This is irresponsible behavior. First of all this is the sort of thing a murderer would do if he didn't want a murder weapon found at his place. Do you know if it is stolen? If he ever decided to break up with you he could report it as stolen. In some jurisdictions the penalty for possessing a gun not registered to you is pretty stiff especially if reported stolen. "Do you have a concealed carry permit? Have you ever been to a gun range? If he is concerned he should have taken you to a gun store and gun range and make sure you know how to use it and then buy you a gun safe. If he owns it legally but you possess it he should put you on the registration as a co-owner at the very least.

Did he show you how to use it or do you have knowledge on how to use it? Firearms are the great equalizer and I believe all women should carry/own them, but you need to know how to safely operate one.

That was not smart as a gun owner on his end because if anything happens to you and you use it to defend yourself, both of you can be liable for fallout of an incident.

His intentions are good, but he should not give you a gun that you did not legally purchase or if you had proper firearms care or training. He should sell it to you and give you the paperwork for the gun to give you so neither of you get in trouble.

You should also take a firearms safety and usage course and understand the gun laws of your state. He should not leave something as critical or possibly incriminating at your house.

Do you know how to use a gun as in proper trained not just oh yeah pull and bam it fires? do you have a licence?
If no to either of these what he did was beyond irresponsible even for a gun advocate.
And well no cause it's illegal here and even if it wasn't yeah i for sure wouldn't do that, If she wanted a gun for protection she should go get one herself and learn how to use it.
Cause i really doubt just giving a person with no experience of a gun, it's kinda like just giving someone a car but they have never drove and just expecting them to drive it fine when they need it sounds... legit lol.

Has he trained you with it?
If he hasn't then that gun is just as dangerous for you and your neighbors as it would be to a would be criminal.
There's nothing wrong with him wanting you to be safe but he needs to train you as well.
Checking the security of your doors and windows would also be a good step. Going over scenarios in case of emergency.
Guns have saved many lives... in the hands of trained people. Guns in the hands of untrained people are dangerous for everyone within range of that bullet.

If you're not trained and experienced with a handgun you're more likely to be killed with it than to be able to defend yourself.

I have a handgun by my bed. I'm trained to use it. I'm an amputee and I can't get out of bed quickly so it's my last line of defence. Please note - LAST resort. I sleep in a room that has a security door. That gives me time to get my prosthetic on and my defence baton out. The gun is an absolute last measure.

It's all really simple. And no hidden agenda, he's just providing extra protection. It's what guys do.

And if you haven't already, and have any interest, spend some time together at a firing range and practice. Get some lessons if necessary. A firearm is simply a tool. It doesn't do ANYTHING unless or until you pick it up and use it.

Do you have a license for a hand gun? Is it locked up at all times? If you don't have a license to carry a gun and you shoot an intruder you can end up going to jail since it's not your gun. You should check your local laws to see if you can be charged if you use it. Personally, I don't think it's a good idea to have his gun in your possesion. I understand why he wants you to have it but it can be more trouble for you.

I wouldn't without taking her to practice shooting first... Handguns can be really hard to shoot well, and it's probably more dangerous to leave someone with a gun they have no experience shooting.

they're not suppose to. they're suppose to be locked up in secure safes at all times unless in use and in the person's home unless that person has a permit to carry or an open carry permit required by law or a concealed weapons permit or license.
