Because flat hierarchies usually do not work. That doesn't mean one partner becomes a tyrann, but it definitely means one partner will be the pilot while the other remains the co-pilot. Though that can also change depending on the topic.

I tried that for most of my relationships. It's the default now, and what men have been told to do for a couple generations (well, boomers said to aways listen to your wife and came up with such pithy sayings as "an unhappy wife makes an unhappy life," or "when mama ain't happy, ain't no body happy", etc). Nonetheless, I tried it for about 10 years in failed, unhappy relationship after failed unhappy relationship. I just got sick of it one day and said "screw it, now, we're doing things my way" and since then, my relationships have been much better. My sex life improved, there was rarely any arguments, if at all, and the girls I dated were much happier than any of my previous relationships. I'm glad it worked out for you and your husband. It just didn't work for me.
