You did the right thing leaving him.
Not only does he not respect you he is also not respecting your culture. A long-term relationship would never work out. If he throws that in your face at the slightest disagreement then just imagine what he is capable of when he actually loses control. You have set the standard for how you should be treated and you need to hold to it. You don't need to be treated like that.
