I know that a lot of people will say it is a birthday, not a big deal, get over it. Others will say the opposite. I want to make sure that i am not overreacting because I feel hurt that my girlfriend didn't remember my birthday.
Some background: We are in a LDR, she lives in Colombia and I am in the United States. We have known each other more than 5 years, but have been together off and on for 2.5 years during that 5 years. She hasn't worked a stable job in 3 years, so I have been paying all of the bills which has caused a financial strain on me. She is looking for a job, but there are very few available there, so not working is not entirely her fault. So during the last 8 months i got her an apartment and when I was there a few weeks ago, everything that someone needs to live a normal life like a bed, sofa, washing machine, refrigerator (apartments there come with nothIng) things like that.
I couldn't travel for her birthday because of COVID restrictions, but I tried to make her feel special anyway by sending flowers, a gift and for her to go out with her friends. When I visited her for 2 weeks earlier this month, on the second day she went to a friend's birthday party leaving me alone in the hotel and my last night there she went to another birthday party over spending our last night together; so she obviously values someone's birthday, just doesn't value mine.
My view is that a birthday is a time to show someone you appreciate and value them for being a part of your life. I reminded her 2 days before that it was my birthday as well, but on the day she forgot. That night I told her that it feels like she just doesn't care, instead of apologizing she responded that she has a lot going on and I am trying to make her feel guilty. I didn't respond to her because I think that i need to think about things for a few days. It is hard to not feel hurt because after giving her everything for such a long time. How would you feel?
