Not that I condone, promote, encourage or agree with any of the measures that had been taken in the past or that are still taken today - legally - but here's what I found on what used to be done in a few different places: stoning (still done today), the scarlet letter, whipping, prison time, fines, drownings and well... death.
But yeah. Punishment used to be pretty severe. Can't recommend this book enough but A Hangman's Diary shows how extreme punishments were, not just for cheating but other stuff as well.

This made me think about this Black Mirror episode where they're all trying to get a high social score. In games they have a separate queue sometimes for people who leave games or champ select a lot or are toxic etc. And then you only play with people like yourself. I thought about that but honestly it's probably better if things stay as they are. Isn't learning how to trust and open up in a world that can stab you in the back a big part of life? If we have a system in the future that tells us who the good and bad people are based on reviews or whatever then maybe humans will lose their gut instincts over time ^^

Well before you can decide punishment you need to set the criteria for cheating and how to prove they did it. Is it only for married couples? Otherwise how can you legally claim they are a couple. Since there is no legal contract to be faithful too. Second is cheating to have intercourse with another partner? Because some people thing it cheating to think about another person and that can never be proven in court. Personally I think it's even more scary to have to file a paper trail to the state about all your love affair then deal with cheaters. And I am not a cheater or a person with high body count.
They have to remain celibate for a period of time like 6 month or more.

I would force them to eat raw garlic or a tablespoon of wasabi paste every day or pay the people they cheated on alimony.

Have you ever known a cheater who was truly happy with their life?

you have to introduce yourself and specify you've been a cheater... to every new person you meet with the intentions of dating
and it would go like it does in the movie Liar Liar... when asked about it, you will be uncapable of lying about it for the next five years... lol Well, obviously they need to be castrated, for starters. If you misuse a car, you get your license taken away. If you misuse a firearm, you also get that taken away. Basically, there should be two options. Either you take the same penalty as First Degree Murder or castration.
Banishment from the marriage with nothing. Must move out of the residence. The faithful keeps the residence... cheater gets no equity or share. No alimony, just whatever clothes are furniture or car they came into it with. Their escapades are revealed to everyone, job, friends, family, community.
Be goneFirst time they cheat. A 1 yr ban from dating/sneaky links.
2 yr for 2nd offense.
4yr for 3rd offense.
8yr for 4th offense.
Eventually they get it together or die alone🥴I really don’t know but I would think that being made to remember the people they hurt. Most of the time they don’t have that in them they try to blame it on someone else or something else. They never own up to the people they have especially the children.
Nothing. I'd be the last to cast the metaphorical stone. I'd only do it if I thought they were an immediate danger to society, and I'd still aim the stone directly in a way that would try to kill them as quickly and painlessly as possible.
Having to deal with your spouse is usually punishment enough, especially if it ends in divorce.
In history, many forms of punishment have been used:
For women: chastity belt, death by stoning
For men: castration, death by stoning
I'm not suggesting any of those punishments be resurrected.Burn them with iron rod which has a C carved onto it so then it goes on there forehead. Then everyone knows they are a cheater.
Honestly their isn't really a punishment that could stop cheating. I mean being caught and being made fun of would be a great punishment but other than that their isn't really a punishment out their for it
Solitary confinement. Not allowed to leave home. No access to porn or lotion or vibrators. Nada. Zip, zero, zilch. No social media. Work, eat, sleep, repeat. Exercise too LMAO.
A day with alec baldwin and a trolley of prop guns.
They all need to be put on a gulag planet and let them scam each other to death for the rest of their lives
The experience of the pain their actions caused their partner x 3.
I remember hearing either a question or a suggestion that said if a man cheats he should lose an inch of his penis... I mean even without cheating I'm dangerously close to negative figures! lol
Odd question, but let the punishment fit the crime. First offenders should get a wrist slap like no sexual contact for a week or two. Maybe a known cheater should be made to stay celibate for a year or so per offense.
Chopping their dicks and tits off sounds pretty good to me.
Any cheater should have a huge tattoo on his leg that says he is a cheater.
For me if a guy cheats on me I would make sure his nuts and his broken nose remember it till the rest of his life. And before you say what if it was the other way around, I would totally accept and deserve such a punishment if I cheat, which I would never doIf in a marriage, they lose the case and any claim to the other's assets.
