To an extent I care about who is next to me, but at the same time, I've tried going out with the pure intention of hooking up and failed so left feeling even more unwanted.

I think that you should put yourself out there, but when you have an idea of what you are looking for in a person, you are often disappointed by what you are presented with. Loneliness is a state that can definitely be chosen. We choose it by being critical with who we allow in our space. There aren't many people in love for love's sake and even fewer friendships are for the sake of the friendship. I believe at a certain stage of emotional maturity, we desire things for their own sake. We enjoy wine and pasta and music that reaches the soul. At that stage, we want a relationship with meaning. We want a partner to die with. Nothing less.
