Why do ex’s text you, even if they are in a relationship?

Because if you didn't get the message the first time they're still trying to prove who they really are to you you know like dating somebody but still making phone calls or texting other girls he just wants to make sure that you know that he still does that and that he hasn't changed is not going to change so you guys are really stupid because they don't realize that the girl is very smart and will realize that if he doesn't let his girlfriend he's going to do it on you and you just got double proof of that

It really depends on the relationship you had. Sometimes it may be just to try and hook up or they might not be over you. Others it could be if kids are involved. Or it could simply be that they see you as a friend and just want to stay in contact. I talk to my ex from 10 years ago, she’s married now and we talk regularly strictly as friends. Just cause people aren’t in love anymore doesn’t mean that they don’t care for the others well being.

Probably for one of 3 reasons. They're in a rebound relationship and want you back. Or they are struggling to let you go. Or they see you as just a friend and still want to keep in contact with you.

In time, the context of his texts and frequency, will let you know his motive.

Unfortunately, this is a 'depends' situation. If the breakup wasn't the happiest or the ex initiated the breakup, they may just be trying to keep you waiting in the wings, "just in case". It's super manipulative and super common for both genders. It's a narcissist/ego thing.
