Meeting his girlfriend?

The guy im seeing met up with his friends girlfriend last week. This girl was also a student at this university and he, his friend, another guy friend and the girlfriend were all in a group. I have seen pictures of all 4 of them together and he seems really close to the friend (the girlfriends boyfriend) We aren't going through a great time but I saw him before he went to see her. However, he told me that he was going to see "someone" and didn't address her as a friend. He was calling and texting his friends girlfriend at university and they met up. I saw them give each other a hug and he patted her shoulder as they walked to university. However I don't understand why he would meet his friends girlfriend and address her as "someone" instead of friend. His friend is currently living in Dubai while his girlfriend and him are in London. However, the girlfriend is following her boyfriend through her 3 instagram accounts and this guy had told me that he will be celebrating the new year with this friend of his and his girlfriend. So I don't get it. Why address her as someone? He has done this before when he once told me he will go to sleep on a female friends couch but she has a boyfriend and how he went out for lunch with his female friend. I ve also seen him meeting another girl at a bar. So why meeting her?
