My situationship is confusing me?

So we were together in his eyes. I’ve always been confused because I never felt like we were with the way he treated me (more as a friend with the benefit then an actual girlfriend)

we had a massive fight and it went down hill. A Week off talking til I sent a closure message for myself saying sorry and what I needed to say, I expected him to not respond because I thought we were completely done.
we went good again for a week until he ruined it by yelling at me. I had a lot of personal stuff going on and I said to him leave me alone and he did for 3 days then messaged me asking how I was. I responded but bluntly, I didn’t get a response. Next day he messaged again saying hoping I’m alright. I responded. He didn’t it took him 1.5 days to respond.

in my eyes we are done and i don’t get why he would keep messaging me every couple of days. We were together and loved each other I still do but I need to move on and I would hate to have to block him. Why would he keep breadcrumbing the messages?
