You just hurted his feelings and considering the fact that he was a good guy but I think it's for the best to avoid you cheating on him, that will be worse. Situations like this requires mutual communication and understanding, the level of maturity between you guys is key. You should have known you didn't like him before even accepting his proposal at first, maybe you loved the gifts and care he showed to you or you were just bored at that moment.
