I'd like to know because otherwise I may commit to do something else (either a paying job or taking on some family obligation, such as doing some repair or upgrade at my parents' house, or, like this weekend, cleaning out the home of a recently deceased extended family member).

Plus, if she's going to be over, I'll stock up on more and different food, usually something I can grill on the BBQ, and I can also do a last-minute once-over to make sure the place is clean. If she surprises me, well, it's likely to be a bit of an inconvenience for both of us. Nothing earth-shattering in most cases, but it would definitely suck if I'd committed to a DJ gig or something when she was expecting to see me all evening.

No there are plenty of valid reasons why that’s a good thing to do. Such as cleaning up or making sure your free.
