Are promise rings worth it?

I know they can mean commitment to anything like your partner, parents or even a friendship. I was thinking about it because I’ve been thinking about getting one for my boyfriend as he’s really been helping me a lot lately both emotionally and mentally and the longer I’m with him the more I realize he’s the one who I want to be with. Call me cheesy, naive, or whatever but it’s how I honestly feel about him. We’ve been together for a year and a half now and it feels right but I don’t know if a promise ring is worth it. I was planning on getting an actual one if it did tho. What do you think?

To me, "promise" rings always seem to be what people do when they aren't ready to be engaged but want to make a statement about their present level of commitment. So. . . is he ready to receive that message from you, and do you expect him to express the same feelings back to you?

Oh he definitely is ready for that message from me. With all the shit I’ve put not only myself but him through emotionally lately like me feeling suicidal, doubt, feeling alone in a house with two family members, losing hope for college being a liable option for me, the arguments we had and the stress I up him under unintentionally because I needed a shoulder to cry no but couldn’t no matter how much I wanted to. He was still there trying to lift me up even though he was hurting emotionally himself and honestly probably still is. He helped me through and now I’m trying to do the same. He’s always been gentle with me emotionally, physically and mentally, only being hard on me when he became really concerned and passionate about changing something about my situation like gaining independence because I’m 18 and I don’t need to be stuck under someone and to in general push me positively and help me get better. I feel like me and him both do better when we’re together compared to being apart. I’m a lot less agitated and I don’t feel as confused or tired and I’m more motivated and mentally so I don’t think nearly as much as I do compared to when I’m at home with my grandma or mom. I feel like getting a promise ring is something I can do without getting too ahead of myself.

I could by an exact replica or even a real medal from the winners of the beijing olympics, but not being the winner of the games makes the medal what it really is for anyone else, just a decoration at best.

Honestly I’m a huge fan of the cheesy stuff. I’ve been seeing a guy and he literally turned a piece of string into a sentimental thing between us to remember our date we went on. Things like this bring you closer together as a couple.

Not really a ring is just a ring just as a marriage certificate is just a marriage certificate if you don’t mean to follow it or he doesn’t mean to follow it.

If you believe he's serious about marrying you, why waste money on a ring? It will be small no doubt, and if you DO actually get married, he'll never wear it again. I don't see the point.

My boyfriend is an emotional person and a lot of things he gets sentimental about a lot of things so I doubt he would stop wearing it entirely plus if he did by chance he would keep it somewhere he could always find it or look at it. I’ve thought about an engagement ring but it’s too soon for that and not because we don’t want to be there sooner or later but because life has hit up with a lot of negative lately and I don’t want to be stuck under my family if I make a decision like that because they are more traditional when it comes to me like if to do something like that they would confused and uncomfortable about it like they always seem to be when I want to go be with my boyfriend because I love him and miss him and because I’m tired of being treated negatively by my own family and I want my boyfriend to meet my dad before we were to be engaged or married since he’s kinda traditional.

You asked if we thought promise rings were worth it. I do not, regardless of the symbolism or emotions of the persons involved. Whatever your situation, you obviously think it IS worth it, and that's fine. My opinion is - it's unnecessary.

That’s for sure. He’s said he’s already set on marrying me one day. He’s been saying that since month 6 or so but it’s just getting more frequent in him saying that.
