I don't know if I'd put too much stock in it these modern days. With the amount of cheating or just "trading" for somebody else going on these days, it is also very hard or impossible to know for sure whether he or she is really keeping their "promise" or not. Back in the old days where it was less casually-oriented, sure.

Exactly. Regardless of rings or marriage licenses, there is never a guarantee that a relationship will last another day. People have walked out of marriages after years to the complete surprise of their spouses. I know a woman who filed for divorce the day after their youngest graduated high school.

There are also the "promise" rings given to young women by their fathers. That's a disgusting practice. A young woman is not the property of her father. Fathers, if you don't want your daughters to get pregnant, take them to a gynecologist and get them on birth control.
