I have feelings for my friends with benefits and he really likes me too, but he also misses his ex sometimes. How should I approach this?

Hello! Previously, I made a post on here about my friends with benefits wanting to slow and asked if it means he wants to start fresh and take turn it into a serious relationship. I have since sat down and spoke to him, and I have found out most of the things I want to know.

My friend with benefits told me 2 weeks ago when we got closer that he isn't looking for a relationship because it's too much commitment. However last night I sat down and spoke to him and he told me he really likes me, but things are complicated with his ex. They are high school sweethearts who started dating after graduation and dated for 2 years. She is now in Canada for college and plans on going to graduate school in Canada as well. My friend with benefits is in college in America (same college as me) and plans to go to graduate school in America. If it weren't for the distance, I feel like they'd be together and still going strong. Outside of the bedroom, we grab dinner together, talk about classes, do homework together, etc. so I feel like there's a lot we do besides sleeping together and he even confirmed with me that if it weren't for his ex, we would've been dating by now. When I ask him who he misses more, he told me these past 2 weeks he's been missing me more.

I just feel a bit conflicted as it seems he's cycling back and forth between his ex and me as he told me truthfully he does miss her sometimes. I can't tell if I'm just physically closer and a temporary void filler for his ex, OR he does genuinely like me but since it's a 2 year high school relationship he's finding it difficult to break it off. I genuinely enjoy spending time with him and being with him, but it's better to know if there's no hope for a serious relationship. Am I just his plan B if things don't work out with his ex? Or just a side chick until he sees his ex again? He doesn't seem to mind when I grab his arm or try to hold his hand, or do anything flirty with him. We've also only slept with each other twice.
