Guy I hooked up with turned out to be in a relationship. He wants to break up with her. Do you agree with me or with my friends perspective?

I met (f27) met this guy (m27) at a party a few weeks ago. I thought it was just a one night stand but we ended up having so much fun the next day and he asked my number. We’ve been texting all day everyday ever since.

Then I found out he’s in a relationship. He told me he wanted to break up with her for a year and a half but didn’t want to hurt her and hoped things would get better between them. When he met me he realized it won’t work out and even tho he likes her as a person he’s no longer in love with her. He planned to break up with her after returning from vacation before I come back from my vacation and “then we could start dating”.

I was very angry with him. I’ve been cheated on by my ex and I called him a coward and selfish. He asked me to give him a chance to show that he’s really not a bad guy and would do everything to regain my trust.

Now I’m not sure what to do. For me this started with lies and so many red flags already. Cheating to me is the worse and most inconsiderate/disrespectful thing you can do.

But on the other hand my friend told me he (m33) was in a long relationship and thought about breaking up for 4 years but stayed because he wanted to keep trying to work on fixing the relationship but then met someone else he fell for and eventually broke up with his girlfriend. His feelings for the other woman made him realize the relationship was over. My friend therefore argues that even tho it’s not the right way to handle the situation, he might really fell for me which despite his efforts to make the relationship work.

Has this ever happen to one of you guys or what’s your opinion on this matter?
