How do you cope with a mother in law who dislikes you for no reason. Has this happen to you before?

I'd say be courteous no matter what. Because even if she doesn't eventually like you, other people will come to your defense.

I've never had that happen to me. But my mother didn't like one of my brother's exes. And for good reason. My mother's reasoning was simply that she - the ex - was cold, distant, didn't try to integrate the family and withdrawn in our (the rest of the family) presence. Bottom line, she was a bit of a buzzkill, harshing our mellows.

If she dislikes you there nothing you can do about it. If you guys have kids, she'll likely come around but she'll be a hypocrite. She'll just get along with you for the kids (her grandchildren) but will never ever be sincerely fond of you.

Unless you literally save her own life, you're stuck with her. All you have to do is just deal with it and be cordial to her. Personally would never get involved with a guy whose mother (or both parents) hates me.

If you build your career she will likely like you more. Is not easy but it might be a positive experience.

I had a crush on a friend for about 2 years. His mother (who he lived with) always hated me for no reason and was really rude to me unless she was drunk, and when she was drunk she was really nice. Eventually I got over that crush as he didn’t feel the same way until it was too late, so I’m glad I avoided having her as a MIL.

I probably wouldn't have married someone whose mother doesn't like me. If the parents are dysfunctional, pretty damn good chance their child is, too.
