Why do people stay in relationship where both aren't on the same page?

For instance if someone wants kids and the other doesn't, then they need to break-up. That is something that can't be compromised since they both want something totally different from one another.

Yet several people still stay in those relationships. Why? It's already a dead-end right there and they're wasting each other's time.

No amount of ''but we're having a good time, I love his/her company'' is going to solve huge differences like that.

I didn't want kids, my wife said she did, but said she accepted that I did not want them.

Well, surprise, surprise, along comes a kid. I tried to be the best father and husband that I could possibly be, yet for me it has been pure torture, purely to give my son a normal life.

I'd hoped for years that things would get better once he was grown and gone.

Now an old man, with the long effects of having had COVID twice, severely, have me utterly reliant on my wife for virtually everything. There is no leaving for me now.

I agree with you, I should have never gotten together with my wife.

I appreciate questions of this nature.

Hopefully my cautionary tale will help someone younger than myself avoid a life of heartache.

People grow comfortable in that kind of relationship. They don’t like the thought of been alone and broken hearted. Also, it can be the thought of “finding no one else” or “I can’t find anyone else better or who will love me?” -
A lot of factors come into play into those kind of relationships.
