Do you have to lose your individual identity to be in a relationship?

I believe people should do things because they want to and not because they are forced. When my grandpa was sick, he fought hard to stay alive for 6 years because he knew his wife would be lonely if he died and less than 3 years after his death, she died too, they had been together around 60 years.

I feel like it happens in a lot of relationships where both people lose themselves and become this one person. It isn’t something that I think should happen, as I feel when that relationship ends you end up completely lost because you don’t know who you are without that person.
