I always say that if you're willing to throw hands (or shoes) you best be willing to catch them, too.
It should absolutely never be okay for anyone to ever put their hands on anyone, but if in some twisted world you catch yourself thinking it's a good idea to physically assault your SO, maybe take half a second and decide if your chances of winning a physical fight are so hot.
It is never okay to hit someone, but it is absolutely 100% okay to defend yourself from a physical attack.
My husband and I joke (because we would absolutely never put our hands on each other in anger) that if one of us leaves the sanity ranch and decides to throw hands, the other is well within their right to defend themselves. And the other one gets what they get.
