Are preferences genetic, socially conditioned, or formed from life experiences?

Preferences are usually framed as static and the line between them and deal breakers is usually unclear in most discussions.

This is a really cool and interesting question.

As I understand, preferences are simply liking one thing or the other. So my knee-jerk reaction was; conditioning.

But thinking about it more, maybe all three?

I remembered those experiments where they split twins up at birth, were raised apart, met up as adults and were discovered to have similar/same preferences and/or personalities. Also, food preferences can be genetic, such as taste receptors, but also people can prefer different cuisines because they are influenced by cultural and social aspects.

And it doesn't matter where they come from. You can't change a person's preference once they are formed. You can just respect them and move on.

I believe they're mainly socially conditioning. Have you heard that we are attracted to those that we find similar to ourselves?

I disagree , I think men tend to like women that are far more attractive than them. Maybe for women it is those that are similar to them
