Why men don't get that wanting you as a friend means that I appreciate you more than a lover?

There is this guy who hadn't stopped chasing me, until some time ago. Then we had a conversation and he told me that he still wants me and complaining that I included him in the friendzone dispite he had confessed his feelings for me. I told him that if I wanted him as a friend was because I appreciate him more than my lovers and didn't want things to end between us, that I value him as a man, because he is kind and gentle and I don't want to lose that, and that my lovers are guys who I certainly find hot but I don't mind if I lose them from my life. He didn't seem to understand that! He didn't understand that sif things get sexual between us, then our relationship will change and then I will be worried that our relationship will eventually end. I don't mind if I lose my lovers, but I feel pain if I lose my friends
