Do you use nicknames with your SO?

Question

When you're in a romantic relationship, are you a nickname person? Like babe, baby, etc. Or do you call each other by your names? If you use nicknames, do you choose them, or do they just happen naturally as the relationship progresses?

I keep hearing these couples come up with the weirdest things and I always wonder how they progressed from something simple to some crazy variation of baby-darling-cuddle-muffin.

I refer to her exclusively as “Tubby”, lmfao, for 16 years now. Had some soft-ass baker battle me about putting it on her birthday cake once, like she thought it was offensive🙄😂 But it’s supposed to be a joke, it all started because she would do the whole “ugh, I’m too fat” routine when she was all of 105 lbs lmao. So I started calling her “Tubby”, she thought it was cute, and it stuck. We actually decided we wanted to saddle each other with intentionally embarrassing pet names, so that’s hers, and I’m known as “Snuggy” (shout-out to her, the “Snuggie” sleeved-blankets weren’t invented yet, so she just came up with that ridiculous name on her own…. although it worked out because I later was able to buy her a Snuggie that says “Property of Snuggie”, so it kind of works (except she hates -ie and much prefers -y on the end).

For short, I call her “Tubbs” and she calls me “Snugs”, but we have long forms of “Snuggy Uggy” and “my sweet, sweet Tubby baby boo”, or occasionally I call her “Tubbita”, since she’s Puerto Rican. My favorite variation of my own handle is “S. N. U. G. L. I. F. E.”😂

I'm Irish so we have tons of nicknames in our Gaelic language and in Irish English slang. A few of the Gaelic ones I use are:

A chroí - My heart
A stóirín - My little treasure
A rún - My love

Then a few of the ones in slang are "Me ducky", "me ol' wan", "my treasure", "cotton socks" and so on.

I more often than not, glend up giving nicknames when I get close to someone, also when it comes to friendships.
I prefer to use something with their name.
Other times it has just been a word that comes up at one point.

I'm not fond of the generics like baby, Bae, babe etc.

Yeah, we do the typical “baby” and “babe.” But I do give him some cringe ones too lmaooo. I started calling him “pookie” as a joke. He hates it so I would say it ironically. But I just ended up saying it all the time and now it’s no longer ironic. Then that would turn into dumb shit like “pookie bear” “my pookie wookie” lmao it’s so cringe but I don’t care
i also call him “bubby” sometimes which he also hates.
he doesn’t have many cringe nicknames for me. He’ll just say “my little baby” or he seems to think “my pain in the ass” is a term of endearment. I’ve just accepted it at this point Lmao. I guess it’s fair since I call him dumb shit like pookie.

Mostly I just called her baby. Like her name was actually baby. I'd even refer to her to my family as "baby" and they called her that too because she was so fucking adorable and innocent.
