How can a person be sorry about getting caught in the act of doing something bad like cheating?

Generally they're just sorry they got caught and don't really care. Though there can be an exception to the rule, where the cheater snaps out of the fog world, sees their partner hurt and the devastation they've just caused. Those are the rare cases that getting caught actually made them changed for the better; it changed my mom. She hasn't cheated ever again since 1992.
