Splitting finances with my Girlfriend?

Me and girlfriend are moving in together and she makes 10K more than me annually. I proposed we split the mortgage 50/50 but since she makes 10K more than I proposed we split groceries, gas and all other bills 75% her and 25% me. Do you think that's a fair way of dividing the finances?

If you’re doing it percentage-wise, the fair thing to do would to pay an equal percentage.



(Assuming you are both working full time and are diligent with your work.)


If she makes 100k a year and you make 50k a year for example…


Let’s say your total expenses are 75k per year.


50% of her income would be 50k.


50% of your income would be 25k.


50k + 25k = 75k.


So, in that scenario, you would be both paying 50% of your income to come up with the final amount it takes to pay the bill.


That’s what I would see as “fair” if that’s what you’re going for.


I personally just pay for everything though.


I don’t mind being the breadwinner and supporting my fiancée 100% financially, which is what I currently do.

Whether I think it's fair is irrelevant. What you and she think is fair is what's truly important.

Let me suggest something. Split everything 50/50, and have her put her excess salary into a joint account, for the two of you to use for special things... like a vacation.

Usually the guy takes care of most of everything but if you’re going to do anything at all, at least make it 50-50 since she makes more than you

I think you should come up with a monthly budget for all joint expenses and divide it 6-5.

The answer isn't the man pays for everything. This isn't 1950s. Men these days too scared to put their foot down and so they just pay for everything even if the girl makes more. Then they go broke.
