It depends on your tolerance for celibacy and your emotional security and purposefulness. I've heard of long distance couples that waited over 6 years before getting married to each other. But many couples can't handle even a few months apart, cause they can't tolerate celibacy, or they are insecure in their desire for attention from the person and feel unfulfilled when they aren't always affirmed by their lover.

They might for some people, But the best bet is a couple has known each other for a time and are separated for a short time, then reunite. If people have never met, they don't actually know each other, except on paper.

You need to meet and experience each other regularly to confirm that you're suited to each other.

Can they? In theory it's possible.

Do they? So exceedingly rare that I hear that they work out.

I think the biggest key to making it work is having an endgame, a strategy for when and how it will transition from being an LDR to an in person relationship. Otherwise, what's the point?

Not if they stay long distance.

Serious effort has to be made to close that distance, even if it's only a couple times over an extended period, and there needs to be an end in sight. Facetime or similar apps are not a viable substitute.

I was in a long-distance relationship when I was younger we talked on the phone for 2 1/2 years before we really met, and it did work out she ended up living with me for years and we traveled the world.

I would say that the time away would be harder to handle than the distance.  If it is long term account of military service or job. There may be a chance. But few and far between for working out!
