Trending & News Unfortunately for my ex it was.

Closed-minded people feel threatened by those who are different, so that can be a challenge in a relationship. In reality, differences don't need to be a threat, as long as those differences aren't shoved down your throat. How can we grow if we never encounter anything different from what is already familiar? I find I learn from everyone I meet, so I'm eagerly drawn in by differences in considerate, respectful, open-minded individuals. Who in their right mind wants to spend the rest of their life wearing diapers and drinking out of a baby bottle... just because it has always been familiar?
We have nothing to gain by promoting conflict. I remember when I decided to go to UCLA. That's when my dad became the biggest USC fan that ever existed (even though he never went to any college). I'll never understand what he hoped to accomplish by that choice.
it wasn't but given how batshit crazy one side of the political spectrum is, it has become one

Not at all. Opposites attract, and different parties can actually lead to interesting discussions. All good.
Depends on how different she is. But probably
I voted Yes because, generally, this is an important difference.
There's an old saying: "Don't talk about religion or politics." because that will eventually cause friction. Being in a couple doesn't change that, so being of the same basic political philosophy and religious philosophy is important toward minimizing conflict.
Let me put it to you like this:
Suppose a couple consisted of 1 person being frugal or otherwise very responsible with money and the other person spends like a terminally ill drunken sailor. Is this going to be a good relationship, let alone, a marriage? No, of course not, because these two positions lead to conflict about going forward in life together.
Well, politics is really the same thing...
Suppose the man is Conservative and is vehemently against abortion so he votes Republican. However, the woman believes in her freedom to not be a slave to her womb, so she votes Democratic. Lord help this couple if she has a career and she gets pregnant because he wanted a baby and put a pinprick in the tip of his condom.
Suppose the woman is very religiously devout and believes prayer should be taught in school but the man isn't very devout but is a member of "AU" (Americans United for Separation of Church and State). Well, when their kids get to school and she wants the kids to go to a religious school and he doesn't want that, there are going to be issues.
No, the idealism of youth says love conquers all.
The reality of human nature learned over the decades is that it is best to determine and then avoid potential conflict.
And, two people who are of significantly different political parties are going to be in conflict - especially if they are passionate in their beliefs.
Don't get me wrong. There ARE couples like this who made it the most famous of which are James Carville (DEM) and Mary Matalin (GOP) who were VIPs in the 1992 Presidential campaigns of Bill Clinton and incumbent President George H. W. Bush (aka "Bush 41"). Carville was Clinton's Chief Strategist while Matalin was Bush's Deputy Campaign Manager for Political Operations. Ironically, they met during the campaign and they got married a year after the election around Thanksgiving 1993.
>>>> They don't talk politics at home.
Not necessarily. It depends on their politics, and their party affiliation doesn't answer that question. I'm a centrist, not registered as a repub or dem. My views depend on the issue, and I have no respect for someone who isn't the same.
What's happening today in the US is the democrat party (and their controlled media outlets) works very hard to paint all republicans as heartless racists and sexists, and the republican party (and their controlled media outlets) works very hard to paint all democrats as woke morons, socialists and communist sympathizers. The reality is the vast majority of democrats and republicans don't fit the image the opposing party wants their constituents to believe. Their goal if for their constituents to hate members of the opposing political party, and many people are happy to play that game and serve as their useful tools.
Sone of their tools are right here on GAG, doing their useful work here every day. One is a self-identified odd "guy", one is a boxer in a legal capacity, and yet another is a malicious person who claims to be normal. Most of the one on the other side of the aisle tend to be anonymous cowards.
Anyway, as far as dating, I guess my short answer is I will never date a useful tool for either side who won't think for themselves.
No, but it could be depending on how far down the political spectrum they were. I find both sides to be off putting when they are so far gone in their left/right wing views that they stop seeing people on the other side as human.
I actually had that problem a little bit with my ex, who was left-wing. It's fine to an extent but when she started alienating people just because she found out they voted Republican, and refused to have an open mind about issues, it was problematic. I mostly just avoided the topic with her, the way I do with anyone who is showing that level of extremism.
It's kind of ironic, but whenever I hear or see someone say something akin to: "Those people (on the other end of the spectrum from me) are totally insane and can't be reasoned with." I realize they are declaring themselves are the crazy ones who can't be reasoned with.
No, political party they belong to. The only thing that would bother me is if they were part of those MAGA people on the news with all those whacked out conspiracy theories, lol. Not trying to sound insulting but those people should really listen to themselves talk. I'm a writer and some of what those people said belongs in a fantasy novel for sure! I'm sure some conspiracy theories do have truth, but the trick is to have facts to back up those theories, Those people just make stuff up, and you know that they're making stuff up because they will add more to their story. But yeah, I dated a girl like that, and she was a pathological liar about everything, and I'm pretty sure those people are part of a cult!
Not political parties, but there are certain ideas and movements that I would think were dealbreakers. For instance, if you are someone who still supports BLM as an organization at this point; that's a dealbreaker for me for the simple fact that I have to question whatever else you might believe or have going on mentally.
BLM has done so much damage to the public, stolen so much money, that I have to wonder if you're in touch with reality if you still support them.
Leftist women are recreational use only. The thought of marrying one, having a kid with her, then having her divorce me, take my kid, and have them transed sounds too horrifying to risk it. Leftist women are usually feminists who would make shitty wives anyway.
No. A person's political views and political affiliation doesn't determine a person value or their personality unless they are some extremist which then can be a deal breaker because that tells me that person is brainwashed, unwilling to listen and learn and very arrogant to assume they are always right and everyone that doesn't agree with their views are wrong.
We are all individuals and we have our own views politically and I'm not going to turn away a good woman because she differs from me politically. That would be stupid.
In recent years, political parties have a lot to do with someone's morals. I won't date someone that is racist against Whites, supports recreational drug use, supports criminals, hates America, hates Christians, supports abusing children, and other bad immoral things.
And I am sure people know exactly which party I am referring to by their actions in recent years.
No but constantly bringing up their love for certain politicians is. Like idc what party but when “I love Trump/Biden/Desantis/Bush/Obama” etc is in every other sentence, the shit is a turnoff and i dont care to be around them for long. I dont want anyone who obsesses over that shit
I honestly find a fight between right and left as something that is wrong. Thinking that the other side is evil makes no sense. Both sides have a goal of making the world a better place to live in and that is the thing that says if they are good or bad (intent). When it comes to US parties in reality both of them are the same. Both of them only care about winning the election, they do not care about people or righteousness, the reason why they stick to their opinions is because that way it is easier to keep people to vote for them. So many people are just agreeing with things just because the party they are voting for says so. Just because someone has a different opinion does not mean they are bad.
We know many couples who have political views that differ. Often times, simply explaining why you have a certain political belief to your significant other will provide clarification and reduce any friction that may be developing.
Too many times individuals focus on who they voted for versus what they actually hope will happen or what beliefs are held.
Around here it kind of is becoming that. I just can't imagine the conditions under someone would choose to be a republican unless they are suffering from crippling insecurities or the narrow worldview of a child, which I don't want to deal with. There could be other reasons but around here I haven't seen any.
not unless the are very extreme to either degree in a psychotic way- other then that i don't care, im independent voter
nope. as long as they don't care either. i don't put much thought into politics and i don't like discussing them. we all have the right to follow who we want. that usually should not change them as a person unless politics is your whole entire personality.
IF you choose to force-feed your ideology, to make it all you eat, s*it and breathe and make it all about your friendship and relationship then yes. #zerofilter. Trump NEVER will sit down to dinner with you, have a beer with you (unless its $10,000 as a fundraiser for his buddy Guilani or himself). Trump is not flying over your house to wave at your kid. And He is not the chosen one...
I don't have a political party as they are stupid, but if you are a leftist woke a-hole, you're gone.
To me it is.
Conservatives in my country are anti-queer, anti-corporate tax, anti-climate.
If you support those values, we're fundamentally incompatible and I don't care to associate in depth.
An obsession with politics in general is a dealbreaker.
I am a Republican my wife was a Democrat
So all I did was had her with me and we both watched both conventions
Wow did that really do it
I told her are you going to be with baby killers, homosexuals, lying and cheating , Chester's in political world no problem
SJ came toy side fastand that was over 36 years ago
Yes. If they support a party that's openly and actively against human rights, I just can't trust them. And it's a very bad idea to get romantically involved with someone you don't trust.
There is no difference, they are two sides of the same coin. To get elected they talk a different talk but in things that really matter they vote alike.
I voted yes, but it only sort of is.
She would need to agree that there are no political parties, that the entire thing is a sham and that they are all the same.
For me, not at all. I don't actually think there is a big difference between most people on the two parties.
Political views may differ but I think the important thing is to respect your partner's opinions...
Nope. I'm a centrist libertarian. I've dated Republicans, a right wing authoritarian, a democratic socialist, a Democrat etc.
No, only if she would be in the left-extremist or right-extremist corner of the political spectrum.
In the past, I would have said "no". However, the dumb shit Liberals have pulled or tried to pull has really repulsed me.
Only if it is extreme. I wouldn't get along with anyone who is extreme on either side.
No. I have good friends who are gay and Republican. How bout dat!!
It can actually be added "spice" in a relationship.
Very true
Not if we base our friendship on deeper things than politics.
LOL no, if you just keep politics away from your discussions
Me is like Mr Beast in this regard. Mr Beast does not even mention about politics or anything like that and neither do I.
Not a dealbreaker, but definitely an orange flag.
No, but if she is a useful idiot of the left I have no use for her.
no, cause what party you vote makes aboslutely no difference whatsoever.
There is no difference
Not for me But I do understand you Yanks are one or the other and that's sad
If it's either of the two major parties, yes. You have a 50% chance of being right.
No, as long as she has rational reasons for her views and isn't some fanatic.
Unless it CPUSA or The American Nazi Party or something else in that totalitarian vein, no.
I'm not a Democrat but Republicans have gone completely insane. I used to not be able to care less.
I will only marry conservative Christian republicans.
As long as she can respect my political views.
lol i am Bi so it would be pretty awkward if my significant other was against it
I don't support any political part exclusively
I don’t discuss politics with anyone
Is for me 🤷🏻♀️
No not at all.
Nope
