I am that man and I know I am a fool and its okay.

I have given her time to think about it and if I don't get an answer within that specific time frame I will move on.

Life is too short and I know I'm too good to be someone's maybe.

She's really not sure if you are the right guy for her, and whether she's ready to commit and settle down. But she doesn't want to lose you.

Give her some time, but not too much time... she'll make a decision one way or the other. Just in case she doesn't decide in a reasonable amount of time, be prepared to move on... without the ring... it's hers, your gift to her... she doesn't need to return it, unless she breaks up with you.

Good advice except on the legal question.

Normally a gift is given without regard for future events. The only two factors necessary to establish the change of ownership are 1) the donor intended to make a gift, and 2) the item was actually delivered to the intended recipient.

However, a gist can be given subject to a condition subsequent. "I will give you my car as long as you will chauffeur me wherever I need to go and whenever I make such a request." In that case, if you stop providing chauffeur service, the car reverts to the original owner.

A ring is a gift given subject to a condition subsequent. "I am giving you this ring with the understanding that we are getting married. If we don't, for any reason, you must return the ring to me." That is how the law treats engagement rings. There are numerous cases on that point and the law in the US is very consistent in the fifty states.

@OlderAndWiser Thanks for the clarification. You are correct, although I have heard of a few cases where the woman did get to keep the ring if the guy broke off the engagement that she was willing to go through with.

What happens more often is that the woman refuses to return the ring and the guy decides it is not worth engaging in a protracted fight, so he simply allows her to keep it. And that is probably a good call. If you paid $5,000 for an engagement ring, you will be lucky to get $2,000 if you try to resell it.

@aviatortom thanks for the advice, the ring was purchased for her and I don't need it back. I will walk away with my head high because i did not cheat, gave 200 per cent for this relationship, was available all time and gave her all my love and never her let her down till date!

Can I have her ring because she sounds ungrateful. If my boyfriend gave me a ring and proposed I wouldn’t even think twice. Women are waiting decades for their man to propose. I’ve never met anyone, who was proposed to, who didn’t give an emphatic “yes” or a solid “no”. It sounds like she’s sure about her feelings for you, but it’s possible the idea of marriage is scary to her. I’d give her a day or two to process everything, and if you feel the need to, ask her again.

I don't know why but that seems like the appropriate way to react to a proposal. I’ll never understand urgency culture. Marriage is a hugeee commitment I’d want to be 100% im ready before saying yes to avoid potentially wasting both our time especially if he proposed and marriage was never properly discussed.
