How to return things to normal in my marriage?

My husband is retired law enforcement now. I don't know how to return things back to normal after him being gone for so long. He had an intelligence job overseas but the time he told me he would be gone exceeded what he told me. he was working on a case but I don't know how to feel anymore. everything that was planned accordingly didn’t happen. I’m completely lost at this point. the trial was seriously late. Everything was late. he was gone for almost 4 years.

Here are some suggestions for trying to get your marriage back on track:

- Communicate openly about how you've both changed during his time away and what you're each feeling - hurt, resentment, loneliness etc. Get it all out in the air.

- Spend quality one-on-one time together without distraction. Go on dates, take a weekend trip just the two of you. Reconnect physically and emotionally.

- Re-establish trust gradually by being fully honest with each other going forward. Make sure there are no lingering secrets or doubts.

- Find new shared activities you're both interested in to build new happy memories as a team. Take up a hobby, join a club, volunteer.

- Seek marriage counseling if needed to work through challenges with an impartial mediator. They can help with tools for navigating difficult talks.

- Be patient with each other as you adjust to this new normal. It'll take time to feel fully comfortable again but focus on the little things that strengthen your bond each day.

- Make your commitment to this marriage a priority. Do regular check-ins on how you're both feeling and little things the other can do to help. Keep choosing each other every day.

With understanding, communication and both of you putting in effort, I hope things will start feeling "normal" again gradually. Keep the end goal of strengthening your union top of mind. You've got this!

What do you want to do? What is late? Just being together or kids or just not sure how to be with him home?

My advice small steps and dating again.

We got married in our 30s so kids are late and we are spending time for us maybe not able to have kids but I want us to be amazing and special together taking time.

Thank you and hugs back! No I didn’t expect his assignment to be this long. The prosecutors and everybody else involved kept pushing back the dates on the specific case. Evidence was submitted late. Lawyers was even late and the dates kept being pushed back. Nothing wasn’t right. He wasn’t suppose to be gone this long and I feel like I missed out on a lot with him. Especially trying for kids. I’m just not sure how to deal with him being home. Also thanks for sharing your experience with your husband and you.

Well still have your life and friends help him get a life and hobbies like maybe 3d printing? My hubby loves that give me more me time and suprises
