I think most intelligent partners can come up with a lie their partner would believe since they know them so well. So I don't fault the partner for believing it, its supposed to be a high trust environment. The liar is stupid for risking the entire relationship and has shown to be an unreliable partner. The mocking of it should be an instant breakup moment. Its an absolute power move that disrespects the other partner.
